May 2, Day 42, riding day 37, St Francisville LA to near Kentwood LA, 49.2 miles, 2241.9 miles cuml.
Today Becky and I rode together 49.2 miles from east of St. Francisville, LA to west of Kentwood, LA. Others rode up to 55 miles on the standard route. Some including Phil said they rode as many as 60 as they got lost. Phil's bike odomoter also reads 1-2% higher than my odomoter and GPS do (about 30-50 miles in total for the trip, perhaps). As we crossed the Mississippi yesterday and arrived at St Francisville, we rode uphill from about 25 ft at the river to around 150 feet of elevation in the town, which was a nice spot. We continued up another 100 feet to our RV campground site, the former Green Acres, now Pleasant Pines. Three folks stayed in a motel in town, and the rest of us stayed at the RV park. There was a picnic pavillion with screens and a huge fan. It was so muggy and hot that most did not get much sleep. We were glad to get out of the sweaty beds and onto the wet roads. It has been about 80-85 during the day and goes way down to about 72 at night, with like 98 percent humidity.
Our ride today meandered along wooded roads, up and down hills again ranging from about 150 ft to 300 ft in elevation levels. We all got soaked at various points today, but arrived at our little church camp campground in the dry. I called it the rinse cycle; Becky said it felt like a wet t-shirt contest; not sure how she knows that.
It poured again as Becky and I prepared spaghetti dinner on the coleman stoves under a blue tarp attached to the van. We do have air conditioning in the bunkhouses tonight so we will get some sleep. We are inching along the border with Mississippi, where Louisiana juts out to the south of Mississippi. Mississippi and Alabama got shortchanged on the gulf coast real estate by Louisiana and Florida. We do finally cross into Mississippi on Monday.
Becky and I were the recipients of a nice cup of soda tossed from a pickup today. Most car drivers are courteous, but there are come jerks that leave a bad taste, and I am ready to leave Louisiana.
