May 7, Day 47, riding day 41, Dauphin Island, AL to Gulf Shores (Perdido Key), FL, 42 miles, 2,503.7 miles cuml., 535 miles to St. Augustine on May 17

The milestone today was crossing into our eighth and final state, Florida, at the western-most part of the gulf shore. We started the day on the 8am ferry from Ft. Gaines on Dauphin Island to Fort Morgan on the mainland of Alabama. It was about 4 miles and took about 40 minutes. There are oil and gas platforms everywhere one looks, in Mobile Bay and out in the Gulf. I counted over 25 in sight. There is a lot of prep work going on for laying booms out to protect the beaches and marshes due to the oil spill.

Today's ride was flat and short, at 42 miles, but in high heat and sun. The Gulf Shores-Orange Beach section of Alabama looks like any shoreline with built up condos and tourist traps, and continued right into Florida's Perdido Beach area.

Janet cut her head in the shower at Dauphin Island campground and got bandaged up. She now wears her helmet everywhere.
