I am cycling across the country from San Diego to St. Augustine. This is my blog, please enjoy it. In conjunction with the ride, I am raising money for the Komen Breast Cancer Fund. Please consider donating by copying this link into your browser: Thanks!

May 5, Day 45, riding day 39, Poplarville, MS to Vancleave, MS, 74.8 miles, 2,394.7 miles cuml.

Today we started early, getting up at 5:50 and having breakfast at the Super8 Motel in New Orleans that opened at 6:30, piling in the van and leaving the motel at about 6:50. We got back to Poplarville by 8:00am, and got our bikes and stuff, made lunch, had a map meeting, and some of us left at 8:45am. The weather was great, just very hot, record temperatures or very close, at about 90 degrees. The ride was flat and hilly, through rural and I mean rural Mississippi, with 3 dog chases early before it was too hot for them. It was 75 miles, and the only convenience stores were at 29 miles (a mile or three off route) and at 70 miles, so Lee, today's driver, served as water boy to the thirsty masses. I got in at 2:05 pm, a ride of 5 hours and 20 minutes. Eli got in about 2:30 and Phil, Jerry and Sharon made it in before 3:00. Phil said he was really tired due to the heat and proceeded to drain a bucket of ice tea. Becky, Frank and Janet arrived at about 4:15pm. Luke and Rita arrived around 5:30 (Luke has had the stomach flu) and Alice and leader Dave followed them in.

We left rider Steve Gibson in New Orleans as he ended his trip to attend his son's Tulane Law School graduation. We will miss him and wish him the very best at this fun time.

We are staying at the White Sands RV resort in Vancleave. It was recently flooded so the first arrivals set up our tents in a stilted picnic shelter. We will have pizza tonight since the day has been long.

The pictures are of a Missisippi road and of Janet and me this morning...
