May 6, Day 46, riding day 40, Vancleave, MS to Dauphin Island, AL, 67 miles, 2,461.7 miles cuml.
Today we had a nice flat ride starting in the fog in Vancleave and rode the final few miles across Mississippi and into and down into coastal Alabama. We crossed a high rise 3-mile bridge to get to our island for the night. We are at the mouth of Mobile Bay on Dauphin Island, near Fort Gaines, in an RV campground, within walking distance of the ferry terminal where we will board the ferry across the bay in the morning. There is a lot of activity with the big oil spill, with equipment, hay on beaches, lines of men moving hay bales from man to man on the beaches, trucks with booms and tanks, etc. Dauphin Island is supposed to be the birdiest coastal town. Tomorrow we sleep in Florida, state 8 of 8. We are still on central time (switched on the second night in Texas near El Paso) and will be well into Florida. Wildlife comment. Two roadkill armadillos today in Alabama -- I did not know they got this far east. Add this to several formerly snapping turtles, a couple of badgers, a weasel and the regular skunk. I was told that Dauphin Island was in the national news due to the potential oil damage. There is tons of activity and they are preparing to put booms across Mobile Bay. Police man the boat launches and marinas to be sure no commercial fishermen are bringing in any catch.
The pictures include some of the ride and bridge to Dauphin Island, and a lot of the oil spill workers on the beach, including one with Phil and Becky sunning on the beach in front of the workers. The videos following are of the manual hay bale movers.
